The first day I heard the term Barcode Reader, I somehow inferred the meaning and knew what it was but I couldn’t explain to anyone who may ask me because I needed some techy knowledge of what a barcode is. Yeah of course, if you are asked what a barcode scanner is, you can’t just say it is a device that scans a barcode. You need to explain what a barcode is.

A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of data. It consists of lines, dots or squares of various sizes or dimensions which can be used to manage and track almost any item you can think of.

The information stored in a barcode can be transcribed to more “meaningful” information by using a barcode scanner

Barcode scanners come in various types. There are basically three types; fixed-position barcode scanners, handheld barcode scanners and stationary barcode scanners. Also, Barcode scanners can be classified based on the technology by which they function. In this light, we have Video cameras, laser scanners and LED scanners.

Whenever you walk into a shop and see a barcode reader, challenge yourself by trying to tell what type it is and what technology it functions by.
