Every system in entropy is difficult to appreciate. Being organized serves a good purpose. Organization involves sorting out things and placing them in the correct hierarchy, order or position so that they can be easily recognized or accessed. Organization is necessary everywhere, including the World Wide Web.
Before the advent of search engines like Live, Google, Bing, etc… people needed a mechanism that can help them easily find information or websites in the web. The most common method implemented was the creation of web directories. A web directory is a website, or portal that lists other websites in categories so that those websites, and the information published in them, can be easily found by a user browsing the web directory.
Let’s take a business directory, for example. A business we directory will list hundreds/thousands of business sites into categories. These categories could include the various types of businesses. Various types of businesses, with regards to ownership, will include Sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, and cooperative. A business directory may also classify businesses according to the activities involved, thus, it may have categories like Agriculture/Mining, Financial, Informational, manufacturing, real estate, retailing, services, transportation, utilities, etc.
Despite the advent of search engines which have helped to make searching a breeze, people are still not giving up on web directories. Popular web directories like the Yahoo Directory, Google Directory and DMOZ have a place that can not be completely taken over by search engines.
The advantages of submitting a website to a web directory can never be overlooked. If this is wisely done, one can gain quality backlinks to his/her site and experience a high ranking in popular search engines like Google. Also, an influx of traffic is obvious since one will be having extra visits from users of the directories and from search engines.
